SUMMARY:Learning Forum: Why Trust is Essential to Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the world\, democratic institutions and norms are eroding. Why? At the core of this breakdown\, argues political scientist Dr. Jacob S. Lewis\, is a deeper crisis of trust. Trust\, which builds slowly\, can be destroyed quickly—and is very hard to resurrect. In this talk\, discover the “three verbs” of trust: bonding\, bridging\, and breaking\, and get a foundational overview of how trust operates within democratic societies. How can we work to rebuild trust together and create a stronger democratic future? \nOur speaker will be Jacob S. Lewis\, an associate professor in the School of Politics\, Philosophy\, and Public Affairs at Washington State University. His research focuses on the relationship between trust\, conflict\, and democracy. His work has been published in the Journal of Peace Research\, Political Behavior\, Political Psychology\, Political Geography\, Social Movement Studies\, the Journal of Conflict Resolution\, and more.   \nThis talk is underwritten by a grant from Humanities of Washington and presented in partnership with The Thomas S. DESCRIPTION:MUCC is honored to welcome retired professor Dr. Sharon Miller to teach an intro course on World Religions. This intro course will be followed by many more deeper dives into the world’s religions over the course of the next year. \nThe first class on April 21st will focus on what religion is\, the role religion plays in society\, and ask the question – does religion need a god? The second class on April 28th will look at the differences between cults\, sects\, denominations\, and how culture shapes faith. \nHere is a bit about Sharon and her approach to the courses: \n“I am pleased to be joining you as an instructor for a series of classes on world religions and the role religion plays in people’s lives. To kick off the series\, this spring I will be offering two introductory classes and in the fall we will dive into studying Islam\, followed by Hinduism\, Jains\, Sikhs\, Buddhism\, etc. \nI come to this subject with both an academic and a deep personal love and experience\, having grown up in the Indian subcontinent\, surrounded by a multitude of faiths. I have a Ph.D. in sociology of religion from the University of Notre Dame as well as a M.Div. Seven years ago\, I retired from academia to move to the NW to be closer to family.
