June of 2026 marks a very big anniversary in the life of the MUCC community. It is the 30th anniversary of becoming an Open and Affirming church within the UCC. That prophetic decision by MUCC so long ago marked a public commitment to welcoming LGBTQ+ individuals into the full life, ministry, and leadership of the MUCC beloved community. It highlighted a commitment to reversing historical religious discrimination by fostering an inclusive community and celebrating diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.
Being an Open and Affirming Church is critical in that it serves as a necessary, public declaration of welcome to counteract past harm, ensuring LGBTQ+ individuals are celebrated, not tolerated. Few churches were Open and Affirming back in 1996 when MUCC made this decision and it was a brave and prophetic decision to stand on the side of radical and inclusive love. And we will celebrate that decision and that love during worship on Sunday, June 28th!
